Hi, My name is Mr. Joseph de Leon, a Filipino and an English Teacher here in Japan since 2005.

Welcome to my Foundation named, The Ulila Foundation.

The word "Ulila" is a tagalog term which means Orphan. It was named after my situation where in 1972 , I became an orphan at the age of 7 months old when my parents separated (click the page "founder" to read my life story). As an orphan, I struggled to survive the hardship of life, living with my grandparents in the mountain and doing my best to help them feed me until I was 12. There were many times in my life that I got no food to eat, begging from other children to share their food to me. I was bullied, maltreated and degraded. These experiences made me stronger and I promised myself to be successful and will help the poor people like me for I know how hard it is to be in this situation.

Most of the people know the hardships I went through and using my name in this Foundation will inspire them to take the challenge of everyday life.

In March 2008, I went home to the City where I spent 33 years of my life, Zamboanga City-Philippines. This was during my spring vacation in my school here in Japan. As I sat at the bench at Boulevard (this is where I spent my life as an orphan, sleeping beside the sea ), I saw some street children walking infront of me naked because they have to clothes to wear. Everything about my hardships during my childhood just flashed back I saw myself in one of those street children. The promise I made to myself when I was a child once again reminded me to do something for these kids.

When I came back to Japan the following month, I started searching for clothes from my friends, and to my surprised, many responded to give me their used clothes.

In December 1, 2008, I decided to name my mission as The ULILA Foundation where I started to send clothes in the Philippines. I then returned home to do the distribution of clothes to these kids and poor families. i just didn't give them the clothes but inspired them with my life story. "Poverty is never a hindrance to serve humanity"...one of the lines in my message to them. Most of these kids felt they were lucky with their situation having heard my story and promised me to finish their studies , be successful and serve others like what I am doing.

In 2010, I started to expand my beneficiaries not only to poor kids but also to typhoon, fire and war victims by giving them rice, canned goods, school supplies from the donations I got from friends, neighbors and facebook volunteers and donors.

As of today, December 6, 2013,on my 5th year doing this outreach missions, I was able to collect and distribute more than 75,000 clothes and school supplies worth 15 Million Yen or 7.5 Milliion Pesos, Cash used to buy rice and other goods amounting to 900,000. Yen with more than 10,000 individuals as beneficiaries around the Archipelago.

From December 25,2013 to January 5, 2014, I will be conducting my next outreach missions in the Philippines for the Typhoon Haiyan Survivors in Tacloban Leyte , Ormoc Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, Iloilo, The war victims in Zamboanga City and street children in Manila.
